JULIA'S LAMENT
by Donna Eubanks
PART 3...... of 3
"You are very sure of yourself, Dr. Hoffman," the witch stated to her.' Are you REALLY so sure of
yourself, doctor?" asked Angelique. "I am, replied Julia. Again Angeliques little game
continued. Angelique sat on the sofa and said to her, "Suppose young David were to have a fall from
his horse, Julia,?" She looked for any sign of fear. Again Julia stated to the witch...."I know he will
not!" This line of questioning was infuriating the witch! She sprang from the sofa and quickly
walked across the room with candle in hand. Suddenly she turned to look at Julia with hatred in her
eyes, "What if Elizabeth and young Amy should come down with the plague?" "What would you do
then, my dear Julia?" The witch asked her with an evil smile on her lips. "They will not become ill !"
Julia stated to Angelique. Suddenly Angelique was right in front of Julia, the heat of the burning
candle almost burned Julias face. "WHY, Dr. Hoffman, how do you know that no harm will befall the
Collins family?" Without waiting for an answer she continued, "What would you do if this town
should burn, and burn..right to the ground..?!" "It would kill lovely Victoria too, and Maggie,"
screamed the witch. Julia replied to Angelique with great satisfaction as she stated, "That will
NOT happen, Angelique, I KNOW that it will not!", she said smugly. The witch was furious now,
and Julia thought she might try to destroy her right here and now. Again the witch continued to
make deadly threats, : What if I send a hundred vampire bats to attack YOU right now, right where
you stand!!?" The witch continued to glare at her with hatred. "That will NOT happen,
Angelique, I promise you that!", she replied with assurance. Suddenly she was back in Julias face
once again, her voice was shaking with rage..."How do you know these fates will not happen,
doctor...TELL ME..!!"
Angelique was beginning to become a little afraid now, it seemed...Julia stood up to her, "Because, my
dear Angelique, they all wear a medallion....a "talisman", to protect them from witches like you!" She
stated with pride, " I, too am wearing such a medallion!" proclaimed Julia. The evil one looked at Julia
in utter disbelief and was speechless for a time. The room suddenly became very quiet, as the clock
chimed in the foyer....it was two a.m. Suddenly they heard a mans voice....it seemed to come from
"everywhere"..... "ANGELIQUE....ANGELIQUE....," The voice was deep, and loud. Angelique
suddenly turned pale, "Nicholas, is that you..?" Her voice was almost timid, not like herself at all.
"Nicholas, what do you want from me..?" "YOU HAVE FAILED YOUR ASSIGNMENT, MY DEAR,
NOW YOU MUST RETURN WITH ME WHERE WITCHES GO WHO FAIL THEIR ASSIGNMENTS!"
"NO, NICHOLAS, PLEASE...GIVE ME MORE TIME , A FEW DAYS, PERHAPS..!" Julia gasped
as she heard the mans ominous voice and saw Angeliques reaction. "NO, NICHOLAS, PLEASE DO
NOT TAKE ME AWAY..! I BEG YOU !" The witch was trying her best to change his mind. Again
the voice spoke.. "I AM YOUR SUPERIOR, AND IF YOU DO NOT DO MY BIDDING YOU MUST
RETURN TO ME!" "But it was MY bidding as well, Nicholas..." , screamed the witch to the
phantom. 'IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE, YOU MUST RETURN TO ME..!" "NO, NICHOLAS..NO..!"
The witch was gone in an instant, her burning candle falling to the floor. Julia quickly picked up the
candle and suddenly looked around the drawing room, foyer, and study, as if to be sure no more
phantoms, ghosts, or witches were haunting Collinwood. "I can't believe what just happened here
tonight, " Julia stated aloud. "Maybe I should check upstairs and make sure everything is alright."
she said. As Julia started to walk upstairs she suddenly heard the witches voice...'Don't think you
have defeated me, Julia....for I will be back....I am still with you and your precious Barnabas....I am
with you always..!" Suddenly the witches laughter echoed all throughout the great house........ Julia
was terror-stricken as she heard the witches voice and evil laughter. She collapsed on the stairs and
began to sob uncontrollably....(sobbing.........) "Oh, Barnabas...we will never be rid of her; Angelique
will continue to haunt us forever!" (more sobbing...........) Julia evidently fell asleep on the stairs,
whether from exhaustion, or maybe fear. She awoke to the sound of the grandfather clock chiming
five a.m....
Suddenly she heard someone at the door, they were entering the house. Julia looked to the front
door to see......Barnabas. "Barnabas, you're home...you came back for me!", she was so happy she
was crying. "Why, Julia, you look so distressed....what happened to you?" he asked with love
and concern. "What about your business trip?" Julia managed to ask. "Oh, I contacted an associate
and asked him to take my place in Boston; he was good enough to agree to it so I could be with you,
Julia, my love. He held her most tenderly and kissed her ever so sweetly. "Oh, Barnabas, I love you!"
She proclaimed it loud enough for the folks in Collinsport to hear. Sit down, Julia, he motioned for her
to sit on the sofa in the drawing room. "Tell me, Julia, what happened to you last night?" He took her
by the hand as she told him of her battle with Angelique. "I should never have left you alone, Julia,
this is entirely my fault....I should have KNOWN she would come to torment you!" Julia looked at
him in earnest, "But Barnabas, I stood up to her, really, I did! I wasn't afraid of her....well, not very
afraid of her, only a little. The point is, I stood up to her, she threatened ALL of us, but all to no avail.
I told her we all were protected from her by the talismans we wore. She became furious at this
knowledge, and then Nicholas Blair, her brother....her devil brother, or whatever he is..came for her, he
took her back to Satans place and she disappeared in a puff of smoke!" "I was so happy to think we
were rid of her, Barnabas, but I soon found out otherwise. Even though Nicholas took her back she
still lives to haunt us even now. She says she will always be with us, Barnabas....ALWAYS!" Julias
face was white-as-a-ghost as she spoke these words.."You know, Barnabas, I DID win the battle with
Angelique....but I feel we have lost the war..!" Barnabas looked at Julia with love in his eyes as he
said to her, "Don't worry, Julia my darling, we have so much love for each other, more love than most
couples have for each other; so don't worry, my love, for love will find a way, Julia......LOVE WILL
FIND A WAY........."
